Kristoffer Eikehaug is a researcher working on subsurface flow physics and geological CO₂ storage. Drawing on a background spanning both practical craftsmanship and academia, he has developed a new experimental method to address limitations in established subsurface science as it transitions from hydrocarbon production to CO₂ storage.
His work centres on the FluidFlower, a sandbox experiment that makes the physics of geological CO₂ storage visible in real time. The system has become a widely recognised tool for demonstrating how CO₂ behaves underground and for communicating complex subsurface processes to audiences ranging from students to policymakers and industry professionals.
FluidFlower experiments are also used as a reference point for testing and improving scientific models of CO₂-water interactions in the subsurface.
His live demonstrations show that while deploying CCS is complex, the underlying physical processes governing CO₂ storage can be made clear and understandable.
